Richard Gleaves helped to organize and form the Republican Party of South Carolina, and
served as the party’s president of the State Convention in 1867. He served in the South
Carolina state militia as a major and judge advocate in the 1st Brigade, Colonel and Aide
to the Governor, and Colonel and judge advocate with the 2nd Division. He worked as a
clerk in the U.S. Treasury Department from 1877 to 1879.
